After four years of living in California, I finally made it up to NorCal. Last weekend I visited the infamous San Francisco and I was head over heels in love. The moment IÂ went across Bay Bridge Friday morning, I was already in awe of how beautiful the city was. Maybe it was the architecture, maybe it was the fact that I got all of two hours of sleep during that eight hour bus ride, or maybe I was partial towards the overcast, but I was very optimistic about my trip. For some background on why I was in San Francisco, I had no actual reason for being there. Thanks to my friend, Alex, I had the privilege of attending the 2015 Special Olympics World Games Opening Ceremony last night. I’ve expressed on social media how inspired I felt during and after the ceremony, but I think joy is the more resonant word. Joy was one of the more prominent themes of the night and that’s exactly what I felt in the Coliseum. To see these individuals with characteristics that they’ve been stigmatized by and treated differently for competing in a global competition with tremendous talents that many believed they couldn’t simultaneously have with their disabilities was incredibly uplifting. To learn a brief history of the Games really emphasized much of what the guest speakers referenced when they spoke about the journey so far; regardless of who wins, every athlete present was already a winner in the fight against discrimination. Well, as many of you know, I had the opportunity to go to Comic-Con International: San Diego this past Thursday! Though I was only there for one day, let me tell you, it was an EXPERIENCE. Upon arriving to the San Diego Convention Center, it’s no surprise why so many people attend this event every year. What originally was limited to the inside of the Convention Center has now poured out into the streets with advertisements and attractions galore. You could easily spend one day of the four-day exhibition outside alone.
